Turn-based RPGs built for a commute
Turn-based combat and mobile phones are a perfect match. You can think at your own pace, put the game down mid-fight, and pick it back up at the bus stop without losing anything.
Ashfall Wardens is the one I keep recommending. Its timeline-based combat is easy to read on a small screen, and the writing gives you a reason to care about the people you're fighting with.
The trick with these games is the save-anywhere design. If a game forces you into long uninterruptible stretches, it's fighting against how people actually play on a phone. The best ones let you dip in for two minutes or two hours.
Don't sleep on the skill trees either. A good RPG lets you reshape a character's role, and experimenting with builds is half the fun once the story slows down.
My tip: play the opening slowly and read everything. These games front-load their worldbuilding, and skimming it makes the later payoffs land flat.
